my response will likely never be seen by the original poster, who i'm sure has moved on, but i had to say something. the repressed fool called me "gross". and maybe i miss flame wars, it's been so long since i had any excitement here. there is no hope of me growing up. if it hasn't happened yet, it ain't gonna.
and i don't even suck my thumb much any more. but i will fight to the metaphorical death the right of anyone to suck their own thumbs. or any digit they find appealing and comforting.
for more information and maybe a kindred spirit or two, go to http://thumbsuckingadults.com/. it is a great site that concentrates on those who suck their thumbs for comfort, nothing overtly sexual, it isn't about sex. it's about soothing oneself. and being okay with it as an adult. it's more common than i thought, and i'm glad of that. hygeine becomes a bit more important, one must keep one's thumb clean, but other than that, i don't see a problem with it. and yes, if i had kids i would feel the same way. the only thing i would do different than many people, is not make my kids feel ashamed of it. because there is just no reason to.
it may seem like a silly issue, but it isn't to me. and i'm glad that person's daughter found my thumbsucking site. i hope she got some courage out of it before being slammed by her parent. and i will gladly take the responsibility for it.
and no, despite my vigorous thumb sucking all through my isolated childhood and beyond, i never had a dental issue. i actually was treated with braces for an under bite, never did i have bucked teeth. it happens, eys, but i don't know how common it is. none of the thumb suckers i ever knew had bucked teeth.
that's all.
