Sekhmet is the lioness-headed goddess that is one of several Dieties known as the Right eye of Re. She defends Re and is sent out to destroy his enemies. Once when she was out avenging Re, Sekhmet was overcome with bloodlust and nearly decimated humanity. To avoid the destruction of makind, the Gods dyed beer with red ochre so that it looked like blood. Sekhmet lapped up the beer (blood), and became so drunk that she forgot what she was doing, saving humanity. Her kinder, gentler side is Hathor. |
