computer monitor help

here's a funny thing:

one of my neighbors gave me a dell computer
why?
because the moniter has a message about being
shut off to save energy and instructs me to
use the computer to reset it
huh?
i've never seen this before
so until i figure out what the hell with that,
i'm going to hook up the box to another monitor
because i think the box is perfectly good,
they just couldn't get the monitor to work

i'd like to get the monitor to work, too
same size screen i'm using now
but this one is dark, and no good for
judging how pictures look
(which may explain some things about my newer ebay auctions)

anyone with a dell ever have the monitor freeze up like that?
it is a trinitron if that matters
